Preparing to go back to school.....

July 19, 2013

Back to school ads are out already.  I love teaching, but July is just a tad bit early to have those out in my book.  There are some things you can be doing to begin to get your child ready to get back in the school routine.

1. Start moving wake up  time and bedtime up by five minutes a day,   This will make it much easier on the first day of school.

2.  Stop by Pershing.  They are still cleaning, so you probably won't be able to get inside, but you can walk around the building on the outside and play on the playgrounds.  This will help refresh your child's memories of school, and for new students, become acquainted with the grounds.

3.  Read at least one story a day.  Visit Decatur Public Library and stay for Storytime.  This will help your child adjust to sitting in a group again (or for the first time).

Also, I will be sending out postcards to set up days and times for orientation.  Returning students will have group orientation, new students to the building will have individual orientations.

First day of students will be August 14.  Orientation will take place the week of August 5-9.

Want to play some computer games with your child and have them work on their readiness skills?  Don't know where to start? Here are some ideas:

Starfall - ABC's and reading activities
Crayola - A fun site by Crayola, (check out the snowman builder game)
PBS KIDS Music, games and coloring activities
BBC Number Time -    Number activities
Internet4classrooms Shapes, colors and early math

If you click on the title on the left, a link will open up below the title.  Click on  the  link and it should take you to the website. You can choose from a variety of games at your child's  skill level.

Welcome!

Welcome to Room 17 Classroom Blog.  This is a new endeavor for me, so hang in there with me as I learn the ins and outs of blogging!

My name is Angie Horvath, and I have been teaching pre-kindergarteners since 1985.  I can not imagine working in any other field than education; I love watching children grow and blossom in the time they spend with me.  I am married to Gary and have two amazing children: Nicole, who was born in 1998, and Levi, who was born in 2001.  I have both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Illinois State University, and continue to take classes online.   I love to read and play on the computer.

I will be posting on this blog throughout the new school year, so come back for updates!
